1 Chapter a Day’s take

3 In the course of time Cain presented some of the land’s produce as an offering to the Lord. 4 And Abel also presented an offering—some of the firstborn of his flock and their fat portions. The Lord had regard for Abel and his offering, 5 but He did not have regard for Cain and his offering. Cain was furious, and he looked despondent.

God determined what was an acceptable sacrifice to Him: a firstborn animal. Cain chose to offer something different than what God asked for and then was upset when God didn’t accept it. We do the same thing–we give or do something for God that is different than what He told us to do–and then we get upset about it! God tells Cain in verse 6 that he would have been accepted–if he had only obeyed God about an acceptable sacrifice. God will always accept us when we obey.
