10-09-12… 1 Kings 4 — A Good Start Is Not Enough

1 Chapter a Day’s take

In verse 1, the Bible says, King Solomon was off to a good start ruling Israel.

Getting a good start when taking on any worthwhile endeavor is important. It sets the tone for the days, months, and years to come. Before my oldest daughter went to college, I explained the value of a good start. I told her that if she would work hard, establish good study habits, and make good grades her first semester in college, it would set the tone for her entire college career. She did just that, and will soon graduate with honors.

The value of a good start is greater than most can imagine. On the other hand, a good start does not guarantee a good ending. King Solomon is an example of this. For a good start to really pay off, it needs to be accompanied by a strong finish. As we read the story of King Solomon, look for clues as to how King Solomon got off track and failed to finish strong. Then apply the lessons learned to your life so you can finish strong (even if you did not get off to a good start).
