1 Chapter a Day’s take

Today, we discover a success formula for defeating the giants in your life!

Faith + Proper Motive + Skilled Action + God’s Help = Victory

  • David had faith in God. Had he not, this story would have never happened. He was confident in God. We see this in verses 45 & 46 when David told Goliath, This very day God is handing you over to me. I’m about to kill you David believed that his God was bigger than Goliath and that God would help him defeat the giant.
  • David had good motives. In verse 46, David says, the whole earth will know that there is an extraordinary God in Israel. His motive was not to become a superstar. But rather to bring glory to God for the whole world to see! This was his primary motive. He did have a secondary motive that is interesting. In verse 26 we read, What’s in it for the man who kills that Philistine and gets rid of this ugly blot on Israel’s honor? Though concerned about Israel’s honor, he also wanted to know “what is in this for me? I am not going to do this for free.” There is nothing wrong with desiring to be rewarded for a job well done.
  • David took action with skills he already had developed. David said, “I’ve been a shepherd, tending sheep for my father. Whenever a lion or bear came and took a lamb from the flock, I’d go after it, knock it down, and rescue the lamb. If it turned on me, I’d grab it by the throat, wring its neck, and kill it. Lion or bear, it made no difference—I killed it. Verses 34 & 35. David rejected traditional military armor and weaponry. He stayed true to his skill set.
  • God helped David. In verse 37, Saul said, Go. And God help you! Saul encouraged David to take action, but added…”you will need God’s help.” In verse David says the battle belongs to God. David was a marksman with a sling shot, but even the best miss sometimes. He needed God’s help to make sure his ammunition would hit the target. It did and the rest is history!
