1 Chapter a Day’s take

Don’t load yourselves up with equipment. Keep it simple; you are the equipment. And no luxury inns—get a modest place and be content there until you leave. If you’re not welcomed, leave town. Don’t make a scene. Shrug your shoulders and move on. Verses 3-5

When Jesus commissioned the disciples to tell others about the free gift of salvation, he instructed them to travel light and not to waste time “arguing people” into the Kingdom. In other words, do not complicate life with lots of unnecessary “stuff.” And…there are more than enough people who are looking for the message of salvation than you have time for. So don’t waste time trying to “push” people toward Christ who aren’t yet ready.

We are the modern day disciples of Jesus. His message holds true for us today. Yet, there has never been a time in history when following Christ’s instruction has been more difficult. The distractions of the modern day technology revolution are unending. The seductive advertising from Madison Avenue is alluring. There are more “time wasting opportunities” available than ever before. It is easy to complicate life very quickly.

Here is one way I have applied this truth. My daughters are not allowed to participate in every activity under the sun. In the arena of sports, they are able to participate in only one sport…that’s it. This leaves time for the most important commitments like mission trips, serving in various ministries at our church, packing lunches for children in need, etc.

I still struggle with this though. Our volleyball season is pretty crazy and wasting time with other distractions makes it is easy to over commit (or to just fritter away time).

How do you keep life simple and maintain a focus on Christ and delivering His message?
