1 Chapter a Day’s take

Regarding the relief offering for poor Christians that is being collected, you get the same instructions I gave the churches in Galatia. Every Sunday each of you make an offering and put it in safekeeping. Be as generous as you can. When I get there you’ll have it ready, and I won’t have to make a special appeal. Verses 1 – 3

The church at Corinth already received the tithes of the people on a regular basis (see 2 Corinthians 8:11). But Paul is asking for something additional. It is a special offering specifically to help the poor.

In the New Testament (just like in the Old Testament), we see God’s children giving regularly based upon a percentage of their income. This is often referred to as the “tithe” which literally means 10%. But we are also to give above and beyond the tithe. This is what this chapter models for us.
