1 Chapter a Day’s take:
In this chapter we see large crowds following Jesus and large numbers of followers deciding to no longer associate with Jesus. What attracted the large crowds? Miracles (verse 2) and free food (verse 26).
But in verse 60, Jesus shared some teaching that was hard to hear. Many disciples said, “This is tough teaching, too tough to swallow.” Then in verse 66, we read that “a lot of his disciples left. They no longer wanted to be associated with him.”
Of the two crowds described above, which one are you in? Do you follow Jesus just for the “benefits” he offers? Or do you follow Jesus even when his teaching is tough? I agree with Peter in verse 69, “We’ve already committed ourselves, confident that you are the Holy One of God.” What about you?
