Genesis 44…Joseph’s Silver Cup

The goal of 1 Chapter a Day is not to fill your brain with content. But, rather to look for God to drop a “nugget of truth” into your heart from each reading. This should be something you can apply to your life. The Bible is not simply a book to be learned…it is a book to be lived!

1 Chapter a Day’s take on Genesis 44

In verse 16 Judah says, “What can we say master? What is there to say? How can we prove our innocence? God is behind this, exposing how bad we are. We stand guilty before you and ready to be your slaves.”

Judah and his brothers WERE NOT GUILTY of what they were being accused of (though they were guilty of selling Joseph into slavery years earlier). But he knew he could not prove it so he decided NOT TO DEFEND himself. He realized this accusation was somehow of God so he took full responsibility.

My first impulse when accused (especially if I am innocent) is to get defensive. This has never proven productive. Judah sets an amazing example of trusting in the supreme, independent power and authority of God. Even though he was innocent, there was no way to prove it. He chose to trust God. It paid off! (I am not suggesting you should not defend yourself when appropriate. Judah knew it was not appropriate here as there was no way to prove his innocence).

What is your take?
