1 Chapter a Day’s take

2-3 Jacob told his family and all those who lived with him, “Throw out all the alien gods which you have, take a good bath and put on clean clothes, we’re going to Bethel. I’m going to build an altar there to the God who answered me when I was in trouble and has stuck with me everywhere I’ve gone since.”

After Dinah’s brothers murdered the Hivites for raping her, they were wanted men by the Canaanites and Jacob’s family was now in danger. But Jacob called on God for help. God told him to go to Bethel and worship Him there. Jacob ordered his family to prepare to worship God by getting rid of all the idols they had picked up over the years, taking baths and putting on clean clothes. And then God protected them as they traveled to Bethel. No one tried to harm them.

God doesn’t require us to take a bath and put on clean clothes to worship Him, but keeping our lives “clean” allows us to focus on God. Jacob’s family had actual, physical idols that they got rid of before they worshiped God. Ask God if you have any “idols” in your life that are keeping you from wholeheartedly worshiping Him.
