1 Chapter a Day’s take

5-7 Rebekah was eavesdropping as Isaac spoke to his son Esau. As soon as Esau had gone off to the country to hunt game for his father, Rebekah spoke to her son Jacob. “I just overheard your father talking with your brother, Esau. He said, ‘Bring me some game and fix me a hearty meal so that I can eat and bless you with God’s blessing before I die.’

8-10 “Now, my son, listen to me. Do what I tell you. Go to the flock and get me two young goats. Pick the best; I’ll prepare them into a hearty meal, the kind that your father loves. Then you’ll take it to your father, he’ll eat and bless you before he dies.”

In Genesis 25:23, God had told Rebekah that her older son would serve the younger one. The blessing that Isaac was going to bestow on Esau included passing down the leadership of their clan to the son he blessed. We don’t know if Rebekah felt justified in deceiving Isaac so that Jacob received the blessing because of the promise God had made or if she was just upset that Esau had married women she did not like at all. (Mentioned at the end of chapter 26.) We do know that her plan that Jacob carried out had consequences for the two of them. Jacob received the blessing from Abraham, but he had to leave his family and we don’t know if Rebekah ever saw him again.

I believe that God was very capable of making sure Jacob was the one who received the blessing from his father without all the deception. But, we often do what Rebekah and Jacob did–take matters into our own hands. And then we have to live with the consequences of our impatience.
