1 Chapter a Day’s take

11-13 The matter gave great pain to Abraham—after all, Ishmael was his son. But God spoke to Abraham, “Don’t feel badly about the boy and your maid. Do whatever Sarah tells you. Your descendants will come through Isaac. Regarding your maid’s son, be assured that I’ll also develop a great nation from him—he’s your son, too.”

Abraham’s son Ishmael was bullying Isaac which, of course, was painful to Sarah, Isaac’s mom. She wanted Ishmael to not be near Isaac any more, so he and his mom were sent away. God took care of Hagar and Ishmael, but they lived apart from Abraham, which brought pain to Abraham.

This situation shows us that the mistake Abraham and Sarah made had painful consequences for many years. They did not wait on God to fulfill his promise to give them a son, they tried to make it happen in their way. This is how life is–if we don’t wait on God and trust Him to make His promises happen, there will be negative consequences.

The good news is that God loves us and doesn’t forget us even when we mess up! Just as God watched over Ishmael and his descendants became a great nation, God will take our mess-ups and turn them into something good.
