01-27-12…Mark 4…Jesus Teaches Through Stories

1 Chapter a Day’s Take

Jesus was never without a story. His preferred teaching method was storytelling. And from the stories, he would make a spiritual point. Verse 2 says: He taught by using stories, many stories. In verse 33 we read: With many stories like these, he presented his message to them, fitting the stories to their experience and maturity. He was never without a story when he spoke.

One of the most effective ways to teach is through the use of stories. And this is not just for teaching at church. It is effective for teaching your children, in the school classroom, or anywhere else you may have the opportunity to teach.

OK…I admit it. I often remember the stories from sermons, better than the Bible chapter and verse the point came from. But remembering the story still reminds me of the spiritual truth that came from the Bible. Jesus knew this to be true. He could have quoted scripture (Old Testament) and left out the storytelling. But he wanted them to remember so he used stories. Note: the reason this technique is so effective is stories tap into our emotions. When we awaken emotion while teaching a truth, it goes into our long-term memory…cool!
